Fort McMurray, AB – Brian Jean, Conservative Member of Parliament for Fort McMurray - Athabasca, today announced funding for Fort McMurray Historical Society’s celebration of Fort McMurray’s first Catholic mission’s 100th anniversary and subsequent settling of Fort McMurray.
“Our Government is proud to support the 100th anniversary of Fort McMurray’s first Catholic mission,” said Minister Moore. “By partnering with communities to support activities that celebrate our shared history and our rich cultural diversity, we are fulfilling our commitment to strengthen our communities and support arts, culture and heritage.”
“Fort McMurray is rich with a variety of cultures who have come together to give the area the strong sense of community it enjoys,” said Brian Jean, MP for Fort McMurray – Athabasca. “Our government continues to support festivities that celebrate Northern Alberta’s history and that embody the spirit of North Albertans.”
The Fort McMurray Historical Society has received funding of $11,900.00 to help present its 100th anniversary celebration, which will take place from September 9 to 11, 2011. The celebrations will acknowledge and celebrate the history of the area. Events will include local artists showcasing musical, song, dance and theatrical performances, storytelling and historic tours and exhibits. Traditional aboriginal round dancing and drumming will also be featured. The original mission building is being restored to ensure this community landmark will remain for years to come as a reminder of how the community began.
The Government of Canada created the Building Communities Through Arts and Heritage program in September 2007. This program provides Canadians with more opportunities to take part in local activities that present arts and culture and celebrate local history and heritage. This program will benefit many community events and celebrations throughout Canada this year.
