OTTAWA, ONTARIO, October 4, 2010 — Today, Brian Jean, Member of Parliament for Fort McMurray – Athabasca, announced the launch of Fire Prevention Week 2010.
This year, Fire Prevention Week runs from October 3 to 9, 2010. The theme, “Smoke Alarms: A sound you can live with!”, gives Canadians an opportunity to reflect on the importance of fire prevention and the many things that can be done to stop fire from destroying lives and property.
“Accidents happen, but in the case of fire, those accidents can be prevented by implementing sound prevention strategies,” said Mr. Jean. “Please test your smoke alarms every six months and make your home and workplace fire safe.”
The Government of Canada promotes and encourages compliance with national and international fire protection standards within the federal government and First Nations communities. All levels of government and all Canadians share responsibility for protecting people from the consequences of fire.
"Our gratitude and profound respect for our Firefighters who, without hesitation, put their lives on the line to protect ours,” said Mr. Jean. “This courage and professionalism demonstrates the very best of human character – and we recognize their role in keeping all of us safe."
First observed in Canada 91 years ago, Fire Prevention Week reminds Canadians of the need to remain alert and responsive to the dangers of fire.
