Continuing Economic Recovery in Northern Alberta
November 17, 2010

Economic recovery remains a priority for Northern Albertans and that is why our government’s number one priority remains the economy and we continue to be focused on creating jobs and supporting families.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper has launched cross-Canada economic consultations leading into the next phase of Canada’s Economic Action plan. Just as he did in 2009, the Prime Minister will seek the wisdom, guidance and common sense of the Canadian people in crafting the path forward. A path that will reflect the values of hard-working Canadians – firm controls on spending, reducing waste, low taxes – and provide Canadians the stability, certainty and financial security they and their families deserve.

Over the coming months, Prime Minister Stephen Harper, his Cabinet and caucus will travel to small towns, communities and cities across the country to listen to and seek the views of Canadians on our long term Economic Action Plan. They will join in discussion with hard working families, small business owners and entrepreneurs, who are the backbone of our economy and the foundation to long term economic growth and prosperity.

Please watch for your opportunity to make your voice heard.

NEWS FROM OTTAWA

On Track Creating Jobs

Statistics Canada reported that there were modest job gains in October. The unemployment rate stands at 7.9 per cent.

  • October’s job growth shows yet again that Canada's Economic Action Plan is keeping our recovery on track.
  • In fact, nearly 50,000 net new full-time jobs were created last month, and since July of last year Canada has created almost 430,000 new jobs.
  • With our economy growing in eleven of the past twelve months, it is no surprise that both the International Monetary Fund and the Organization for Econonic Co-operation and Development project Canada will have the strongest economic growth in the G-7 over 2010 and 2011.
  • However, as we have said all along, the global economic recovery remains fragile.
  • That is why groups such as the Canadian Chamber of Commerce are warning that Michael Ignatieff's plan to raise taxes is a “disastrous idea” that will “put the brakes on job growth" and is "the wrong thing to do if you want to create jobs and growth in the economy.”
While our Government is focused on continuing to implement our job-creating, low-tax plan, the Ignatieff-Bloc Quebecois-NDP Coalition want to dramatically hike taxes halting our recovery in its tracks and killing almost 400,000 jobs.
