Ottawa - Brian Jean, MP for Fort McMurray - Athabasca, expressed disappointment in the decision of the Ignatieff Liberals’ MPs and Layton NDP MPs who failed to support Bill C-575, The First Nations Financial Transparency Act.
Unfortunately, most Liberal MPs and all NDP MPs did not see fit to support this important proposal to support First Nations’ elected officials in the delivery of accountability to their constituents. However, this important proposal still passed Second Reading 151 - 128.
“We are once again disappointed in the Liberal and NDP Members of Parliament who continue to fail to represent the best interests of their constituents,” said MP Jean. “All NDP and most Liberal Members of Parliament did not see fit to support Conservative MP Kelly Block’s Private Members Bill which would give First Nations elected officials an important tool in delivering accountability to their constituents.”
Bill C-575 would create legislation to disclose the remuneration paid to councillors and chiefs subject to the Indian Act. By establishing a clear, consistent standard for the financial disclosure of salaries and reimbursement of expenses of elected officials, citizens can make informed decisions.
“First Nation citizens deserve to know what their leadership receives in salaries and benefits,” said Mr. Jean. “I am proud that this important bill is being sent to committee for future discussion but am disappointed that Liberal and NDP MPs did not support it.”
