FORT MCMURRAY, Alberta – Brian Jean, Parliamentary Secretary to the Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, today officially opened the expanded apron at the Fort McMurray Airport.
“This safety improvement project at the Fort McMurray Airport demonstrates Canada’s New Government’s commitment to safety at regional airports,” said Mr. Jean. “This contribution, together with previous funding, enhances not only safety, but also the continuing viability of the airport.”
The Government of Canada contributed $2,005,130 to this project, which involved the expansion of the apron, the construction of an asphalt shoulder, associated drainage and electrical work and the replacement of airfield signage. Since 1995, under the Airports Capital Assistance Program (ACAP), the Fort McMurray Airport has received more than $8.4 million for safety improvement projects. These improvements will help to ensure that the Fort McMurray Airport remains a safe and efficient facility.
Under ACAP, which was established in 1995 and renewed for five years in January 2005, airports may apply for funding towards capital projects related to safety, asset protection and operating cost reduction. To be eligible, airports must have year-round regularly scheduled passenger service, meet Transport Canada airport certification requirements and not be owned by the Government of Canada.
“ACAP is an example of Canada’s New Government directing infrastructure resources to where they are most needed and can best enhance safety and security,” said Minister Cannon. “This program is just one way the government seeks to ensure a safe, efficient and affordable airports system to serve Canadians well into the future.”
