Suncor Federal Fire Service Exemplary Medal Presentation
November 15, 2006
Thank you for the invitation to join you this evening to pay tribute to those who have provided exemplary service to Suncor, and to our community.
Though most of us will never personally experience the trauma of a terror or tragedy, upon the mere sound of a siren, we are instantly reminded of the grand sacrifice every one of you willingly makes on a daily basis, on our behalf. With never a second thought or pause in your step, you embrace your responsibility with the devotion to duty and service that is the hallmark of those in this high-risk profession. Regrettably, Canada’s Fire Service members are often not afforded the recognition they deserve. Were any non-believer to spend a single day in your presence experiencing the reality and danger of the Fire Service profession, any understated sentiments would surely disappear. What impresses me most is your modesty. Your simply reply when being commended for risking your lives for that of others - “We are just doing our Jobs”. The Fire Service Exemplary Service Medals being awarded tonight were created in 1985 in honour of the service of full-time and volunteer Members of the Canadian Fire Service. They are bestowed on behalf of Canada’s Governor General in recognition of those whose exemplary service is being honoured. This Medal features Crossed Axes, a Hydrant and a Maltese cross, an internationally recognized symbol of the fire prevention community, superimposed on a Maple leaf and suspended from the Red ribbon of Service. The red ribbon representing fire, the gold representing the quality of the service honoured. Exemplary service is characterized by good conduct, industry and efficiency. It is my honour tonight to be here with all of you, to present these awards on behalf of the Federal Government, in the knowledge that you serve your community with distinction and integrity even at the cost of your own security. That is a gift you present to us each and every day of your career, for that gift of self, I thank you and offer heartfelt appreciation from your community. |
