Sudbury Gas Tax Fund Announcement
September 01, 2009
Thank you John (Mayor Rodriguez). Ladies and gentlemen, good afternoon. Thank you all for being here today. Strong, sustainable communities that offer prosperity, economic opportunity and a high quality of life for all residents, begin with strong, sustainable public infrastructure. Today, I’m happy to recognize the Government of Canada’s contribution of $5.65 million in federal Gas Tax funding towards various road and bridge projects throughout Sudbury. For the residents of Sudbury, the improvements to Municipal Road 55, Paris Street, as well as various bridges and culverts, will result in a safer and more effective transportation system... ...which will support economic development by reducing congestion and improving the flow of goods, services and people in the area. The environment is a priority for Canadians, which is why the Gas Tax Fund is dedicated to environmentally sustainable municipal infrastructure projects and supports projects under several infrastructure categories, including transit, local roads and bridges, water, wastewater, solid waste, and community energy systems. The Gas Tax Fund is a key component among a suite of infrastructure programs provided by the Government of Canada to help Canadian communities address their infrastructure needs. Our Government also recognizes the importance of infrastructure investments to build a stronger economy. That is why we are helping to meet infrastructure priorities in communities like Sudbury and across the country, as well as contributing to immediate and long-term economic growth through investments in public infrastructure. It’s no secret that investments in infrastructure are an investment in our future. With today’s announcement, we are continuing to make progress in providing dependable, efficient infrastructure in Ontario. I would like to thank Sudbury for their cooperation in making these infrastructure projects a priority. Canadians expect all levels of government to work together to provide the modern infrastructure that will make our country stronger. Today’s announcement is proof of our intent to work together to continue to create jobs for Ontarians and to build an even stronger Ontario. Thank you. |
