The Home Renovation Tax Credit
March 03, 2009

Dear Constituents,

I've recently seen a lot of interest in the Home Renovation Tax Credit so I’d like to provide you with some details to help you get started.

The Home Renovation Tax Credit – Here’s How it Works:
This credit will provide a one-year, temporary 15% income tax credit on eligible home renovation expenditures for work done or goods acquired before February 1, 2010. The credit can be claimed on eligible expenditures exceeding $1,000 but no more than $10,000.

The first $1,000 receives no credit but anything over $1,000 and below $10,000 is eligible to receive 15% back in tax credit. The maximum benefit is therefore 15% of $9,000; or $1,350. The credit can be applied to renovations to a home or a cottage.

Some common projects that are eligible for the Home Renovation Tax Credit include Renovating a Kitchen or Bathroom, Finishing a basement, Installing new carpet or flooring, Replacing a furnace or AC unit, or Building an addition.

Routine repairs and the purchase of tools or appliances do not qualify. Only one Home Renovation Tax Credit claim can be made per family but family members can share the credit.
