Veterans Week
November 05, 2008
FORT MCMURRAY, Alberta – Canada's Veterans have a proud heritage, history and tradition. Our Veterans were ordinary men and women who did extraordinary things. They were there when we needed them most. Each year, Canada marks Veterans' Week from November 5 to 11. It is a time to honour and remember all those who served Canada in times of war, military conflict and peace. Member of Parliament, Brian Jean, has special reason to honour this week. “My father, at the age of 16, joined the Canadian Forces to proudly serve this country he so loved. Now my oldest son is stationed with the Canadian Forces in Halifax,” says Jean. “This week, I remember my father, think of my son, and honour all those who worked, fought, died, and sacrificed to keep Canada safe.“ During Veterans' Week, events are held in communities across Alberta and across the country. These events are a time for Canadians to remember and reflect on those who served and died protecting Canadian values. We not only pay tribute to all Canadian Veterans, but we also honour those who continue to serve our country today. As Canadians, we have endless opportunities to become involved in remembrance. We can talk to a Veteran, visit a local cenotaph or monument, attend a Remembrance Day ceremony and wear a poppy to signify our gratitude and thanks. Canadians are encouraged to contact their local Royal Canadian Legions to find out more about community Remembrance Day activities. |
