Brian Jean Defends Oilsands Industry in the House of Commons
June 08, 2010

OTTAWA, ONTARIO – Today Brian Jean, Member of Parliament for Fort McMurray – Athabasca, spoke out in defense of the oilsands industry in the House of Commons. In a statement to all Members of Parliament, Mr. Jean proudly explained that Northern Alberta is a major contributor to Canada’s economy and that instead of criticizing its existence, people should start learning about the scope of the oilsands operations and recognizing the region’s importance to the country as a whole.

“Northern Alberta is the economic engine of Canada.  Our region provides 6% of Canada’s GDP and creates over 250,000 direct jobs throughout the country,” said Mr. Jean in his statement.  “What you hear through the grapevine is not always the truth.  People do not understand the good, responsible environmental work that the oilsands companies are doing.”

He also mentioned that the Fort McMurray airport is the fastest growing airport in North America and that in the last five years movement has increased from 200,000 to 700,000 passengers annually.

“It is important that my colleagues realize that Fort McMurray is no longer a little outpost town in Northern Alberta.  It is a thriving city of 80,000 people, with approximately 350 flights leaving the oilsands region every week for destinations all around Canada,” said Mr. Jean.  “I don’t think that we will get the recognition that we deserve until people understand that Canada needs Northern Alberta.  It needs the oilsands.  The growth and success of the oilsands is a huge part of Canada’s future.”

Mr. Jean concluded his statement by inviting Members of Parliament from all parties to visit the oilsands and to see for themselves what’s happening in Northern Alberta.  His statement was met with cheers and applause from his colleagues.
