Fort McMurray – Athabasca
Brian Jean was first elected to the House of Commons in 2004 and re-elected in 2006, 2008 and 2011 as the representative for Fort McMurray – Athabasca. In 2006 he was appointed by the Prime Minister as the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Transport, Infrastructure & Communities. Over the five years he held this position, he enjoyed the privilege of working closely with three senior Cabinet Ministers in this role, the Honourable Lawrence Cannon, the Honourable John Baird, and the Honorable Chuck Strahl on one of the biggest federal portfolios.
As Parliamentary Secretary, Mr. Jean successfully guided 15 bills through committees, ten of which became Canadian law. These laws help to strengthen our nation’s transportation system, and to increase safety and security in the marine, road and rail sectors. He was also instrumental in drawing much needed government attention to the outdated Navigable Waters Protection Act, which has since been studied extensively and is currently being revised. Mr. Jean was tasked to make recommendations to the Minister on applications for the Green Infrastructure Fund, a $1 billion initiative to encourage investment in sustainable energy generation and transmission, along with municipal wastewater and solid waste management infrastructure.
After the 2011 election, Mr. Jean chose not to accept the reappointment as Parliamentary Secretary in order to spend more time in his Fort McMurray – Athabasca riding. Prime Minister Harper has instead appointed him to both the Finance Committee and the Justice/Human Rights Committee and Mr. Jean is looking forward to the new challenges these committees will offer.
Prior to entering politics, Mr. Jean was a well-established litigator in Alberta, and a successful entrepreneur and businessman. He was President of the Fort McMurray Downtown Business Association, Director of the local Chamber of Commerce and Honorary Chair of the Children’s Health Foundation. He holds a Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Law, an MBA and is currently working on obtaining his recreational pilot’s license. Mr. Jean is an outdoor enthusiast and he is the proud father of three adult sons.
